A few minutes from our Landhotel Sand in Ciardes/Tschars, Venosta Valley, there is the Juval Castle
, one of five Messner Mountain Museums
. From the hotel, the castle may be reached on foot along a scenic canal walkway. In the thirteenth century castle, objects and works of art from Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan are on permanent display. During the months of July and August, the castle doubles as the summer residence of Reinhold Messner.
The Venosta Valley is also the right place for those interested in culture. The romantic town of Glorenza/Glurns
, (the smallest in the Alps
, with its seven towers), the imposing Coira Castle
(with the largest private armoury in the world) and the Monte Maria Abbey
, are all well worth visiting. Even a visit to the medieval Castelbello Castle or the Archeopark in Senales Valley (not far from where Ötzi, the Iceman was discovered) all form part of the Venosta Valley cultural program. In the immediate vicinity there is Tyrol Castle
, housing the Museum of History of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano/Meran.
Hikers and mountain aficionados cannot forgo the Merano High Mountain Trail at least in part, the Venosta Valley High Mountain Trail, take a hike through the Martello Valley or to the Zirmtal Lakes above Ciardes.
