THE SPA TOWN MERANO
Merano is situated at an altitude of about 330 meters and is known as the pearl of South Tyrol. Protected to the north and to the east by high mountains, this is South Tyrol's second largest city, blessed with a particularly mild climate which enables cypresses, palm trees and even cacti to grow. Merano, the capital of the Alpine-Mediterranean holiday region surprises visitors with its rich offer of cultural and leisure activities. Contemporary architecture blends harmoniously with the town's old buildings, and modern hotels sit side by side with the beautiful buildings of the Belle Epoque. The Merano Thermal Baths and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are also worth visiting.
VEGETATION IN VAL VENOSTA
Travelling east from the city, you arrive at Tel. This marks the geographical border with the Val Venosta region with its flora and fauna exposed to an unusually abundant quantity of sunshine, thanks to the specific local micro-climate. While the vegetation on north-facing slopes of Monte Tramontana is green and lush, the climate on south-facing Monte Sole is relatively dry resulting in sparse vegetation, making it the ideal place for outdoor holiday activities in nature.

VAL VENOSTA RAILWAY
Visitors wanting to experience Val Venosta and the region of Merano in one day should take the Val Venosta railway from Merano to Malles, or cycle along the beautiful Adige cycle path from Resia to the spa town of Merano. There is also the combination of “cycle and railway”.

THE BEST PART OF IT:
YOU RECEIVE THE VAL VENOSTA CARD FOR FREE USE OF THE RAILWAY FROM RECEPTION ON ARRIVAL.

In the thirteenth century castle, objects and works of art from Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan are on permanent display. During July and August, the castle doubles as the summer residence of Reinhold Messner.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN CULTURE
The romantic town of Glorenza, (the smallest in the Alps, with its seven towers), the imposing Coira Castle (with the largest private armoury in the world) and the Abbazia di Monte Maria, are all well worth visiting. A visit to the medieval Castelbello Castle or the Archeopark in Val Senales (not far from where Ötzi the ice mummy was discovered) are also part of the Val Venosta cultural programme. In the immediate vicinity there are Tyrol Castle, which houses the Museum of History of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano.

Hikers and mountain aficionados should not miss out on at least a section of the Merano High Mountain Trail, the Val Venosta High Mountain Trail, enjoying a hike through Val Martello or to the Laghi dei Cirmoli above Ciardes.
